About Ada County Sheriff's Office

The Ada County Sheriff's Office is the largest local law enforcement agency in Idaho, with almost 900 employees and roughly 450 commissioned deputies. Deputies patrol unincorporated Ada County along with the cities of Eagle, Kuna and Star, and the office also contracts police services to those communities.

Idaho's Constitution and state law put nearly every law enforcement function under the county sheriff, so the work here covers far more ground than patrol alone. ACSO staffs the 1,224-bed Ada County Jail, runs the county-wide 911 emergency dispatch center, issues driver's licenses and concealed weapons permits, patrols county waterways, handles forensic services, and serves civil process from the courts. Specialty assignments include K9, Marine Patrol, SWAT, the Crisis Intervention and Crisis Negotiations teams, and the Sheriff's Anti-Crime Team.

Veterans get real credit here. Idaho law provides veterans' preference points on initial hire for eligible applicants, and four years of honorable military service moves a deputy to the same pay step as a four-year degree. Detention Deputy, Patrol Deputy and 911 Dispatcher are all registered apprenticeship positions, so eligible veterans can use GI Bill benefits and receive a monthly housing stipend while getting paid from day one. Lateral applicants with prior certification start at a higher wage level rather than the bottom of the scale.

Boise and the surrounding valley sit at the center of Ada County, with mountains, rivers and public land within a short drive.

Pay and benefits

  • Salary: $65,874 - $111,987
  • Education incentive: Wage increases for POST certification level (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Master), for college credit (64-95 units, 96-128 units, or a four-year degree from a regionally accredited school), and for U.S. military service. Four years of honorable military service pays at the same step as a four-year degree.
  • Retirement: PERSI (Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho), police officer classification - Fixed monthly pension income in retirement after five years of service through PERSI. Optional 401(k), Roth IRA and a 457(b) deferred compensation plan with a county match up to 3%. Longevity pay is added at 5 years for patrol deputies and at 7 years for detention deputies and dispatchers.
